How ironic is this? A social media agency owner discouraging people from hiring a Social Media Manager (SMM). 🫣
But I’ve seen too many cases of brands (both personal and business) delegating their social media based on misguided and unrealistic expectations. 😔 Only to be discouraged by the results and eventually end their services.
If you are considering hiring a person or an agency to manage your social media, make sure to take note of these:
1. You have time
If you are in your online business full-time and starting out, there’s the chance that you still have time to learn the ropes and do the dirty work.
If you can have at least an hour or two of focus time (not an exhausted “you” spare time), you can dedicate that to managing your social media and creating your own content. When you find the right tools and get into the habit of doing it, the less time you’ll need eventually!
Know the basics. It can go a long way and save you unnecessary expenses. Especially if you learn free automated tools.
However, just focus on one primary social media and another secondary. Never try to grow all platforms at once.
2. You don’t have existing clients or revenue
But wait – doesn’t being on social media lead you to clients and sales???
Yes, but be sure you already have an income that at least can cover the costs if you want to hire an SMM.
Remember that hiring an SMM is a long-term commitment thing. While it can be considered “investing” in your business, results and client conversion will take time. Especially if you are still building an audience.
You might be burning your capital unnecessarily before seeing results.
3. You don’t have a social media and/or content strategy
This is a common misconception.
An SMM’s role is to keep social media running and implement social media strategy. While some SM agencies include strategy in their services, most don’t.
The smart and most cost-effective approach is to have a plan ready before hiring an SMM. An SMM can unburden you with daily little but essential social media tasks. They are not responsible for sales and client conversion.
If you know or have strategies but don’t have time to implement them, then go for an SMM. Otherwise, make sure to get your head with a Social Media or Content strategist who can align you with your business goals – social media goals and what strategies to do best.
So when to hire?
When you need to delegate you can focus more on important tasks. When you already have consistent revenue to cover additional costs. And when you have a strategy in place!
